I agree with you that the uncolored image is actually more powerful, not only for the "Universal Studios monster movie" quality but also because it appears to take place during a night so dark that the eyes' color receptors no longer work.
That said, the combined innocence and adulthood of the kneeling woman (who is clearly too old to be a mortal child who might make for a good changeling exchange) makes it look to me more like the spriggan is there to protect her from graveyard monsters since she is honoring the dead rather than graverobbing.
now i wont go to a graveyard alone ever xD
and why did you put your name on the cross?.. is not that nice.. little freaky..
